Imagine Jim Hall, Bill Frisell and John Scofield at
a barbeque hosted by Frank Zappa…
Both guitar majors in their third year
of the Capilano College Jazz Studies Program,
Jeff Younger and Alvaro Rojas play jazz, funk, ambient
and originals with nasty

>Dec 27, FRI, 9:30PM [Paula Toledo & Marcus Martin]
'Paula's girlish voice combined
with its sense of rawness
and power captivates audiences. Her songs are original melodic
pop tunes with an alternative/folk
edge that speak about life seen
through her perspective and the
perspective of her story's characters.
she's a local singer/songwriter & actually
working with a local producer Marcus Martin (who accompanies
her on some of her songs and
will also be featured during the
evening) so they're kind of unofficially
a duo. And are keen to perform at
the LUGZ COFFEE. The third track
on my demo 'Stray' is a good indication
of what they sound like live without a full
band.
THIS EVENT WILL B DIGITALLY RECORDED, a POSTING OF IT WILL FOLLOW HERE.
Info: 604.875.9975 / 4342 Main St., Vancouver.

>Nov 22, Fri, 9:00PM [Paul Frew & Company]
"Behind the Line"This four piece blend
of original acoustic and electric
melodic rock is made up of rhythm acoustic guitar,
lead electric guitar, bass, drums
and male vocals. Influencing sounds
include Blessed Union of Souls,
Ben Harper and The Counting Crows. Lyrics are
about love, life, loss and God...
and although the band only formed recently
, their cafe/coffee shop performances
so far have been extremely well
received, and they are already
starting to draw a regular following. The appeal is to
both to younger and older
generations, certainly an act worth seeing.
Sarah Burnett: A young and talented singer, her
warm tone and wide range are
not often surpassed. Sarah has already
been singing for large audiences for
years, both for weddings and church events. She shall
be recording in Edmonton in December.
Tonay Quays: A trained musician (piano & guitar
) and songwriter, Tony has recently
stepped out into performing original music
on his own. Tony's lyrics carry
depth and his melodics are catchy.

cheeky and uncompromising rebel of literary forms.

Some artists prefer to exist in those moments when sound becomes music_ the border where vibrations become tones and pulses, the fleeting vacuum where clouds of sound begin to form discernible clusters of harmony. Those are the territories where the possibilities become endless, where prospects unfurl with gentle certainty. This is the space where Interior Design thrives in. A one man mobile musical entity, Interior Design specializes in ambient vistas of sound for spaces both small and large. Its unobtrusive, but it's there nevertheless- the ideal background for meaningful interaction, conversation, and contemplation. Or maybe you don't get up at all. Whatever you do, it doesn't take long before you find that your life has become unbearably mundane and predictable. People are boring. You are boring. Everyday is the same as the last. And then one day something happens. Everything begins to feel different, although you are sure nothing has changed on the outside. (This usually occurs after that unecessary sixth cup of coffee.) The people in your life look different -- more like wild animals than humans. You swear the events in your life have happened before, but you can't pinpoint exactly when they took place. It is as if you are living in a dream... in fact, for once your dreams make more sense than your waking-life. You're not sure whether you like this world more than the one you are used to; you're not even sure if the world you knew even existed. You wander the streets, aware of every sound, every movement. >JAN 12, 2003, 8:00PM [Teen Angst Poetry]
Here's my definition: it's the poetry one wrote between the ages
of 12-18 (or later) when one is depressed or hurt and it is an outlet for the most
"profound" thoughts (or you thought so at the time- like "yes this explains everything I mean to say").
Most often it has horrible rhyming schemes and very obvious metaphors. Common themes are :
I am alone, No one understands my pain, I will never love again, fuck you, fuck off,
go to hell, and life sucks. EVENT SCHEDULE: The whole evening usualy takes about an hour
to an hour and a half depending on how many poets there are. Now the reading usually
goes something like this: I get up talk about what is teen angst poetry, then
read some of my own, people laugh, then the next performer gets up, more laughs etc.

...commencing the last three days of the 3day Novel Writing Contest.
For more information visit www.anvilpress.com. Starry Dynamo
hosted the international 3-day novel writing contest last year. The International 3-Day
Novel-Writing Contest takes place every Labour Day long weekend. While it began as a joke,
it eventually became a dare, and has now become a literary institution.
It has spawned what is probably the only genuinely Canadian genre in world literary
history and has gone on to garner international attention and a reputation as the
cheeky and uncompromising rebel of literary forms.

January[2002] >Jan 1-10, Mon-Fri, 10:00PM [Hossein K] Hey!!! Thank you lots and lots for giving me the opportunity to perform at your cafe! I can't wait! I'd want to do this sometime in early January, if possible. My set will be about 40 minutes long, and prices are very negotiable. Someone mentioned something about a poster when I phoned the other day; I'm sorry to bring this up now, but I don't have the tools to make a poster!!! (It depends on what kind of poster you are asking for). Anyway, hope to hear from you soon, and again, thanks a million for the gig! In case you decide to announce future events, please use my stage name, which is 'Jagged'. Hope to hear from you soon! :) 'Jagged's music is a mix of electronica and rock, with some early 90s grunge influences. He has recorded 2 full-length CDs and is currently working on his 3rd. His performance at the Starry Dynamo Cafe will be his first solo one, and he hopes to put on a good show! -Hossein Info: 604.875.9975 / 4342 Main St., Vancouver. >FEB 13, Wed, 8:00PM [DJ Arthur & Galen...] Arthur & Galen Combinatin' & Consolidatin' Galen and Arthur taking it easy at the Starry Dynamo. December[2001]

>Dec 01, Sat, 8:00PM [Anvil Press Awards...] 3-Day Novel writing contest 'POST-MORTEM' Starry Dynamo hosted the international 3-day novel writing contest this year; the prizes will be given out this December. The International 3-Day Novel-Writing Contest takes place every Labour Day long weekend. The event began as a joke, became a dare, and has now become a literary institution. It has spawned what is probably the only genuinely Canadian genre in world literary history and has gone on to garner international attention and a reputation as the cheeky and uncompromising rebel of literary forms. >Dec 03, Mon, 8:30PM [Poetry Class...] Langara's Dr. Holdstock -- OpenSTAGE Readings! Some 20 students of a Langara College's Creative Writing:Poetry course for the fall 2001 term will give a public reading of their works on the evening. Readings will begin at about 7:30pm. Their readings will continue until about 8:30, when others may wish to add their works and voices to the open stage. This will be an evening of new and exciting work by writers who have spent the past three months in intensive workshops of weekly reading and critiquing. Come and enjoy the results, and bring your own poetry to read if you wish to join the open stage. This is a licensed event Organizer: Dr. J.
